Is Your Site Listed in the Major Search Engines?
It pays to know if the major search engines have indexed your site. Many engines now charge for submissions. While paying can help your site be indexed deeper or more frequently, marketers on a tight budget can apply those funds elsewhere if their site's pages already show up in that engine. So how do you find out if your site is already indexed?

Major search engines now understand the phrase site:www.yourdomain.com where "yourdomain.com" is your site's domain name. Most of them return a list of all of the pages in their index from that domain. It pays to try both site:www.yourdomain.com as well as site:yourdomain.com (without the www) to see if it makes a difference in the number of pages found.

If your site is indexed on Yahoo Search, only two top-level pages are returned. Click the "Repeat the search with omitted results included" link to see all of the pages indexed by Yahoo. MSN Search is still using the Yahoo engine (that may change soon) but does not provide the "omitted results" option, so only two pages will be listed if MSN has your site indexed at all.

If your pages are listed on Google, Yahoo, MSN and AOL, then you've got well over 90% of the Internet search traffic covered.
